Startup life isn’t glamorous like in movies, Meta CTO says

Meta’s CTO Andrew Bosworth spoke candidly about the harsh realities of startup culture in a new podcast interview. He highlighted that the lifestyle is far from glamorous despite its romantic portrayal in movies and popular media. Bosworth had to frequently wake up every four hours for two continuous years to ensure an effective antispam system, emphasizing the sacrifices involved with success in startups.

According to the CTO, while there is tremendous camaraderie and mutual support among teams in startups, the lifestyle demands significant personal sacrifices. Bosworth recollected having to give up social activities and recreational enjoyment for much of his twenties. At one point during the development phases, he had to devote 120 hours a week to work, compromising his diet, hobbies, and sleep.

Bosworth warned that the venture is not always fruitful despite the colossal investments in time and effort. He urges those interested in startups to maximize the leadership resources at their disposal. He commended the zeal for startups and risk-taking but highlighted the stark contrast to its glamorous portrayal, recommending a realistic perception of the journey’s challenges.
