Gravity, a New York-based startup specializing in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, has launched its new public charging station, presenting it as the fastest in the U.S. The charging station can provide up to 200 miles of range with just five minutes of charging, showcasing advanced technology from Gravity Inc. that aims to match the time efficiency of traditional gas station visits.
Gravity Inc. is an EV infrastructure company concentrating on sustainable fleets and related infrastructure. This startup, which we first reported on in 2021, initially gained attention for rolling out a fleet of all-electric Mustang Mach-E yellow cabs in New York City. Gravity also collaborates with building owners and parking operators to establish electric vehicle charging infrastructure to cater to individual drivers as well as large EV fleets.
The partnership of Gravity with Google Ventures (GV) garnered attention in 2021, with GV leading a successful seed funding round for an undisclosed sum. With this financing, Gravity has been able to deploy dozens of its rapid UL-Listed EV chargers across the U.S., providing unprecedented charging speeds to the public.
In an event held in Midtown Manhattan, Gravity unveiled 24, 500kW EV charger systems, proclaimed as the fastest in the country. Starting today, fleet and commercial operators, as well as EV owners, can visit the Gravity Charging Center and experience the new technology.
Without making any utility upgrades, Gravity was able to establish its 500kW Distributed Energy Access Points (DEAPs) in an existing parking garage, ensuring installations are easily replicable at any parking site in the U.S. This move sets Gravity well on its path to accelerate EV adoption and hasten the green transition of the U.S. electrical grid.
Speaking to Reuters, Gravity CEO Moshe Cohen shared the company’s ambitions to match or outpace Tesla’s supercharger network expansion. Cohen stated: “If you look at how many Tesla Superchargers are added per year, we can add that many or more to grow our network. There’s nothing blocking that.”
Gravity’s 500kW EV chargers can deliver up to 2,400 miles of range in a single hour or up to 200 miles in five minutes. Despite being touted as the fastest in the U.S, most EVs currently cannot handle a 500kW rate while charging. However, this technology is a step forward, assuring that each vehicle reaches its maximum rate and paving the way for advancements in EV platforms to handle higher speed caps.
Gravity has plans to deploy thousands more fast chargers across the U.S. but will need additional funding. The company plans to continue its fundraising drive to capitalize on the significant interest it has already garnered from potential investors. The plan is to embark on a nationwide expansion for its fast-chargers as quickly as possible.
The Gravity Charging Center is located at 401-471 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036.
