Dutch startup Monumental is revolutionizing the construction sector with industrial robots that lay bricks. This comes alongside the growing realization that the US $2 trillion construction sector is ripe for automation-fueled disruption. This industry often involves strenuous, repetitive, and occasionally dangerous tasks that robots are built to handle effectively.

No two construction projects are the same, which presents a diverse and challenge-filled environment for startups. Bricklaying robots are not a new concept, however, companies like Hadrian X have been navigating this space, specializing in building concrete masonry block structures. Contrary to this, Monumental focuses on the traditional red clay brick structures.

Founded in 2021 by the team behind data visualization firm Silk, Monumental has already conducted limited pilots in the Netherlands. The startup has completed projects such as the 15 meter exterior of an office building and has formed partnerships with 25 contractors, including low-income housing.

Monumental has an innovative system that combines human expertise with robotic efficiency. Their technology comprises an autonomous cart for carrying heavy loads, a robot that spreads liquid mortar, and another one that lays bricks.

Recently, the company announced a substantial $25 million fund round led by Plural and Hummingbird. Other participants include Northzone Foundamental and NPHard Ventures. The fund will be directed towards hiring, scaling manufacturing, and expanding the range of bricked structures that their robots can handle.
