This Colorado startup aims to be the ‘Airbnb of parking’ in Vail, other mountain towns

Parking in ski resort towns can pose a challenge, especially during peak times. The Colorado startup, Spotsurfer, hopes to change this. Operating out of Edwards, the company aims to ‘be the Airbnb of parking’ in areas such as Vail, Arapahoe Basin, and Winter Park. The application aims to reduce congestion and parking struggles in these popular mountain towns.

Spotsurfer works by connecting drivers to available parking spaces near ski resorts, such as businesses and homes. “People rent out the interior of their houses,” said James Hohenlohe, founder and president of Spotsurfer. “With our app, they rent out their driveway or their extra parking space.”

Here’s how it functions: Drivers download the Spotsurfer app, input their destination and rental dates, select their preferred parking spot, and then reserve it in advance. Property owners including hotels and homeowners, lease their unused parking spaces to Spotsurfer, which then lists these spots on its marketplace. A 2 dollar credit card fee is applied to the daily rate for a parking spot, and the booking fee is split equally between property owners and Spotsurfer.
